Essex Golf Union – Coaching Programme
We are justly proud of our Coaching Programme that has developed over a number of years.
The process starts in September when Junior Organisers are asked to submit names of boys who might be considered for places in the County’s golf squads. At the end of November we hold trials to select boys to receive extra coaching at The Warren and Crowlands Heath Golf Clubs. These boys are placed into four categories Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16. Approximately 20 are selected for each group. The Coaching programme commences in March under the tuition of some of our top Professional coaches in Essex.
We concentrate mainly on short game aspects, understanding and expecting that each boy will have an individual coach and that input at this level could cause confusion when dealing with the full swing.
Coaching takes place on a monthly basis and are full day sessions for the older groups. We have practical sessions in the morning, but cover other aspects such as fitness, diet, course management and self discipline in the afternoons often followed by 9 holes of golf. Obviously team building is an important background consideration.
During the winter months we hope to be able to meet for a fitness programme designed to support young golfers.
Each boy’s home coach is encouraged to become involved as we consider that communication between the coaches can only benefit the progression of each boy.
From these squads we select the teams to play inter county golf, but just occasionally late developers are invited to compete alongside our squad players.
We look forward to benefiting from The County Academy Programme which provides additional support to boys who have talent but for one reason or another did not quite make the County squads.
During 2010, in all, over 220 boys benefited from extra coaching at a high level from the County’s Coaching programmes.
