BEDFORDSHIRE SENIORS versus ESSEX SENIORS
Played at Pavenham Park Golf Club on Monday 16 May 2011
Result: Beds 2 – Essex 8
SENIORS OPEN WITH A WIN
Pavenham Park provided a stern test for these veteran golfers with some of
the slickest undulating greens they are likely to encounter this season.
Fine and dry weather ensured fast running fairways, but a perfect day for
golf provided a perfect result for the visitors.
Essex reversing last year’s loss with a splendid 8-2 victory.
The only reverse score was suffered by Romford’s
Geoff Kirwan who lost by the last
putt on the eighteenth green.
Orsett’s Cliff Keeble and Romford’s
Steve Hazel both halved their contests with Cliff having a close scoring
match all the way round and Steve not being able to close out on his
opponent.
Rochford’s Ray Weidner (2 up), Orsett’s
Jeff Woolgrove (2&1), Upminster’s
Chris Harrington (7&6), Braintree’s
Robert Barrell (3&2), Upminster’s
Clive Pemberton (2 up) and
John McInerney (3&2), and playing
last but finishing early Colchester’s
Alan MacNaught (5&4) did Essex proud.
The match was played in the best of spirits with team manager John McInerney
thanking the Pavenham Club and the Bedfordshire team for their hospitality
with a typically humorous and entertaining speech to the assembled company
at the conclusion of the day.
Essex Seniors versus Suffolk Seniors
Played at Langdon Hills Golf Club on Thursday 14 April 2011.
Result:
Essex 7
Suffolk 5
After a most indifferent start to a season for several years by the County first team (three matches three defeats), it was left to the Seniors team (Over 50s) to break the losing sequence when they met the Suffolk team in their early season friendly.
Teams of twelve players each side teed-off on a very pleasant spring day. Orsett’s Cliff Keeble produced a closely fought halved match at the head of the field and was followed in the second m,atch by Rochford’s Ray Weldner with a 4 & 3 win. Geoff King (West Essex) produced another half when his opponent Adrian Callaby fought back from a 4 down deficit. Chigwell’s Tommy Dods gained a further half and Robert Barrell (Braintree) enjoyed a 1 up win.
A useful lead of 2 points from the first 5 matches was followed by 3 reverses for Jeff Woolgrove (Orsett), Colin Walker (Boyce Hill) and Andy Hgginson (Stoke by Naylands) who was making his debut in the County team.
John McInerney (Upminster) and team manager, made a welcome return to form with the best score of the day – a 5 and 4 win. Boyce Hill’s Phil Alderton had a 3 and 2 win on his first appearance for the team. Bursted’s Barry Graylin and Langdon Hill’s David Walsh completed the afternoon with a 4 and 3 win and a half respectively

The old men of Kent triumph again
On the Tuesday afternoon the six players from each of
the 11 counties teed-off in fine sunshine at this course which is adjacent
to the Mentmore Estate, the erstwhile home of the Rothschild family.
The competition is a stroke play contest with 5
out of 6 scores counting for each of the two rounds.
The CSS for the course was 72 and after a first round
the home county of BB&O led by 4 shots (374 for 5 rounds), from the eventual
winners Kent (378).
Essex was down the field on 396 with West
Essex’s Geoff King having the best score of 75, and Steve Hazell (Romford)
with 78.
In
contrast to the first day Wednesday’s weather was wet and windy but, in
spite of these worsening conditions the Kent score improved by 10 shots to
368 whilst BB&O’s score went the other way to 385.
The
Essex team also defied the worsening weather returning a score of 385 to
finish in seventh place overall.
In the terms of overall performances the best Essex
player was Steve Hazell who came 10th out of 66 players with a +8 score of
152.
Geoff King was second best in 16th place
with 153.
In 18th place overall was Orsett’s David
Doe with 154.
The best
individual score of the competition went to Kent’s Chris Hurst whose second
round score of 67 gave him an overall score of 143, 1 under par.
Our congratulations go to the Kent team who have
dominated Seniors golf in the South East for the last several years and will
now carry our good wishes for a successful National Final to be held at the
Gog Magog course on 4-6th October.
The
Essex team was Steve Hazell (Romford); Geoff King (West Essex); David Doe (Orsett);
Ramon Weidner (Rochford Hundred); Cliff Keeble (Orsett) and Jeffrey
