ESSEX BOYS versus SUFFOLK
Played at Haverhill GC on Thursday, 14 April
Under 18s – Essex 6 Suffolk 3
Under 16s – Essex 5½ Suffolk 3½
On a cool cloudy spring day a combined Essex U18/U16 took on Suffolk in
their annual match at Haverhill Golf Club. This was the first match
for the U18s in their campaign. In the morning foursomes both the U18s
and U126s took a 2-1 lead.
The afternoon singles saw the U18s winning 4-2 with convincing wins by
Mason Papple & Ben David bot 7&5. The U16s was a slightly closer
affair winning by 3.5 to 2.5. The course was well presented although
the greens were a little tricky.
The club members and staff looked after us particularly well. Our
thanks to all concerned.
Total match score: Essex 11½ and Suffolk 6½

Steve
Morrison, Under 16s team manager report:
A very young Essex team played their annual Under 16 fixture against
Bedfordshire on a scorching hot day at a splendidly turned out Cromwell
course on the Abbotsley Golf Centre near Cambridge, with a number of players
making their debut for the county.
As seems to be the way this season we started
poorly in the morning foursomes only managing a single win from David
Briffaut (Boyce Hill) & Brandon Mead (Burstead) 4&2 and a half from Dominic
Piccolo (Channels) & Toby Gibbons (Thorpe Hall). Behind by 3½ to 1½ at lunch
the team had a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles and this was not
helped when we lost the first two matches after lunch. But this was followed
by some fine wins from our debutants led by Taylor Carter (Ballards Gore)
8&7 and Toby Gibbons (Thorpe Hall) 5&4. After fine wins from Michael
Kendricks (Five Lakes) 4&3, Billy Mason (Maldon) 6&4, Brandon Meads (Burstead)
it came down to the last match on the course which was won by Bedfordshire
with some fine play to tie the match at 7½ to each team.

East Region Under 16 Championships
For the Skevington Trophy
The annual East Region Under16 Championships was held at a wind swept Diss
Golf Club on the Suffolk/Norfolk border and featured the best Under 16
players from Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire.
As has proved the norm this year the Essex players
started very slowly in the morning round with the exception of Jack Phillips
(Bentley G.C) who shot 2 over par to put him one behind the leader from
Bedfordshire. Again the Essex players came back strongly in the afternoon
with Under 16’s Captain

Steve
Morrison, Under 16s team manager report:
On a
bright day at a well presented Weald Park Golf Club, Essex hosted Sussex and
Kent in the first match of this year’s inter-counties Under 16s league.
Being a
triangular match the format was nine hole foursomes in the morning and 18 holes
singles in the afternoon, with teams gaining two points for a win and one point
for a half.
After
some very hard fought morning foursomes Kent held a slight lead going into the
singles with 11 points, followed by Essex on 10 and Sussex on 9.
The star performers
for Essex were Billy Mason
(Maldon)
and Michael Kendricks
(Five Lakes)
who won both their matches.
The afternoon was
equally hard fought with Essex making a good start when their second player out
Dan Garner (Romford) won both his
matches but with a run of poor results in the middle matches and despite another
maximum from Michael Kendricks Sussex were able to pip the other two counties
with a score of 32 points, closely followed by Essex on 30 and Kent on 28.
