The Redbourn course played well considering the amount of
rain preceding the match. The greens proved receptive but difficult and the
Essex boys could not match the Hertfordshire boys around the
greens.
The morning 18 holes of foursomes were won by Herts 4 to
2 with only one Essex pair Lewis Adair and
Joe Sullivan managing a win. The afternoon singles thus started with Essex needing at least seven wins from the twelve matches.
At the turn Essex held a lead in eight
matches, but this was not to last long and most of the matches went to the
18th green, where the Herts players familiarity with the subtle
borrows proved the difference between the teams. The afternoon singles
finished level at six wins each, to give an overall 10 - 8 win to
Hertfordshire and Joe Galbraith the Essex Captain presented the Cheshunt
Salver to the Herts captain Sam Claridge.
Essex players
worthy of note are Rob Tredgett and James Webber both of Channels, Harry
Eden of West Essex, Joe Sullivan of
Stockbrook Manor, Lewis Adair of Orsett and 14 year old Lee Wilson of
Rivenhall Oaks, all winning their singles matches. Jack English of
Colchester making his debut for the county was desperately unlucky to lose
the final match to the more experienced George Hewitt (of Chadwell Springs
GC) on the 18th green, where a win would have retained the trophy
for Essex.

WINNING WAYS
Boys Under 18s & 16s match
versus Suffolk
Steve Morrison, Under 16s team manager reports:
On an overcast but dry day at Nazeing Golf Club a
combined U18 & U16 team played their second boys match of the season against
Suffolk
hoping for a more favourable result than against Hertfordshire earlier in
the week. A much better performance in the morning foursomes left Essex in a
strong position leading 4½ - 1½ with our biggest wins coming from Jack
Heasman (West Essex) & Matt Capps (Ballards Gore) 4&3 & Tom Owen (Rochford)
& Chris Moore (Crowlands Heath) 3&2.
We
then moved into the afternoon singles and some very interesting pairing on
paper proved just that.
Our U18
captain Joe Galbraith (Rochford) had to finish with 3 birdies to obtain a
half with Suffolk’s Welsh
international Rhodri Hartson and this was quickly followed by an outstanding
4&3 win for Rob Tredgett (Channels) against Hugo Dobson.
Again finishing with birdies on the
final two holes Jay Beisser (Rochford) defeated England international Liam Brace and
James Webber obtained a hard fought half with Patrick Spraggs.
Unfortunately the remaining U18 players could not sustain this and
the next two matches were won by Suffolk.
But
the U16 boys then took over with wins for the ever reliable Jack Heasman,
Ben Herbert (Clacton) Matt Capps, & Chris Moore followed by a return to
winning ways for Steven Jones (Canons Brook) giving us 5 wins from 6 singles
matches to complete a comprehensive 12½ to 4½ win. Thanks must go to Nazeing
Golf Club for hosting this fixture and to Suffolk for undertaking
the long journey down to Nazeing.

SOUTH EASTERN
COUNTIES BOYS’ QUALIFYING COMPEITION
played at Rookery Park GC, Lowestoft.
ESSEX
BOYS ‘NOT QUITE THERE’
The
Rookery Park Golf Club played host to the South Eastern Counties Boys’
qualifying competition on Friday, 30th May 2008.
Although early in the season this is arguably the summit
of boys teams’ county golf at regional level.
Only one county in the eleven members of the group can go forward to
the national finals.
The Essex
team was led by captain Joe Galbraith of Rochford Hundred who put in a
personal performance which nearly took the individual prize.
Unfortunately his five team members could not match Joe’s consistency
and after a morning round which placed Essex second to the home county,
Suffolk, the afternoon round proved to be too tough for both teams, and
Surrey came through to take the prize of representing our region at the
national finals later this year at Royal North Devon Golf Club, Westward Ho!
The Essex squad was Joe Galbraith, Jay Beisser (Rochford),
James Webber and Robert Tredgett (Channels), Jack Heasman (West Essex),
Steve Jones (Canons Brook) and non-playing reserve Andy Milne (Rochford).
