(Royal Epping Forest)

Michael Richard Spall was born in 1942 in Stamford Lincolnshire after his mother was evacuated from their family home in Chingford because of the war. He was married to Stella and has two Children Lindsey and Russell.

He spent nearly 40 years in the property business then in 2002 he sold his Waltham Abbey based firm of Chartered Surveyors and Commercial Agents and retired early to devote more of his time to his work on the County Golf Union.

Michael first association with golf was in the mid 1950’s when a friend told him he could earn as much for one round caddying as he was earning for a weeks paper round (5 shillings). The following week he attended the West Essex Golf Club and got a job caddying for a member in a Thornton Cup match (that member was the very well known Dingy Bell). He had a very enjoyable time caddying and became the regular caddy of one of the best young golfers in the Club and travelled the South of England to the major golf clubs with his employer.

Michael recalls one Sunday he was called into action when Essex were playing a home match against Middlesex at West Essex and he was asked to caddy for a Middlesex player. As luck would have it he was to play Sir Michael Bonallack and not only that he managed to beat him 2 and 1.

Michael joined his present Club The Royal Epping Forest Golf Club in 1963. He was their youngest ever Captain 1n 1973/4 and President in 1993/1997 .He chaired their Centenary Committee culminating in a magnificent celebration in 1988. Over the years he has also been a member of several other Clubs namely The Hertfordshire and West Essex and is currently a member of Southbroom Golf Club in South Africa where he has a second home.

Michael joined the Executive Committee of the Essex Golf Union in 1989 during his 22 years on the Union he has enjoyed considerable success as Manager of both the Colts and County sides
