Mighty
Masters 2011This was the 8th annual event of this popular promotion to attract youngsters and their parents to golf. Neil and Gaye Sjoberg of Epping Golf Course, together with members and the staff team of sponsors Daniel Robinson, spent the morning erecting the tents, marking out the putting green, chipping area etc., and sorting the many prizes.
Braver beginners were treated to 9 holes on the front or back 9 holes of the main course which was, as always, in superb condition. 97 children took part supervised by a further 70 parents plus 50 non-combatant toddlers in prams! One mother, who had brought her twin girls said "I never thought of golf before as something I could play with the girls, but I am hooked! We will be back for the family lessons". There were many prizes in a wide range of categories supplied by sponsors Daniel Robinson & Company and able assistants to monitor and assess the scores came from the Essex Golf Union. The event is targeted towards children under the age of 16 not holding a golf handicap. Special rules were in place, eg Lost balls and airshots don't count; no more than triple par per hole. Three Pros gave free lessons for 4 hours and many youngsters went away with free sets of clubs kindly passed on from now grown-up golfers. Overall winner of the Mighty Masters Trophy was Jack Charleton from Theydon Bois and winner of the experienced event was Tom Keen from Braintree.
Another very successful Mighty Masters event.

Essex Under 10's Championship
The first Essex Under 10s
Championship was held at, and sponsored by, Crowlands Heath Golf Centre on
Sunday 18 September and what a success it was.
Marcus Radmore, supported
by Chris Jenkins, did a superb job of organising an open competition with 25
boys and 4 girls competing over 9 holes stroke play. The course was set up
in accordance with US Golf for Kids guidelines at 1750 yards, par 36.
In perfect weather the
level of golf played was of a very high standard.
Congratulations go to James
Styles from Chigwell who is our first ever Under 10s Champion with an
impressive level par score of 36, to Nicholas Mounsey from Boyce Hill who
was 2nd with a score of 37 and to Harriet Lynch from Thorndon
Park who was 3rd with a score of 38.
It was generally agreed
that the competition was a great success with players, parents, organisers
and spectators alike having a most enjoyable day.
There is no doubt that this
competition is a welcome addition to the events calendar and will grow from
strength to strength in the coming years.
