ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP
Chelmsford Golf Club – 22nd & 23rd June 2017
Play on day one of this year’s Championship was delayed due to a nearby thunderstorm, but eventually got underway on a pristine Chelmsford course, with the par 68 providing a tough challenge to a full field of 78 players. The early pace was set by Fred Selfe (Belhus Park) and Ron Wilkes (Orsett) who both returned a very creditable 74. Fred submitting a nett 67 and Ron a nett 68. It took a large proportion of the field to finish before Alan Connell (Chelmsford) finally bettered their score, with a gross 73, also giving him a nett level par 68. But it was down to the late starters to set the best overnight scores, Mark Witten (Orsett) submitting a gross 72, quickly followed in by defending champion, Steve Rooney (Orsett) who had the best round of the day, a 71.
The players hope for better weather conditions on the second day were thwarted by a persistent strong breeze blowing across the course. Fortunately, the sun did shine to keep temperatures up, and Mark Hyam (Warley Park) set the early Clubhouse target with a 74 to follow up his opening 75, his 149 total proving too difficult for most to match, and his nett 137 setting a very challenging target in the over 60’s category. As many players were having their challenge blown off course, Graham Bennet (Chelmsford) came in with an excellent 71 (the best score on day two) to add to his first round 77 to take the lead with a 148 total, which also put him in a strong position in the over 55’s nett event with a nett 142. Both Alan Connell and Mark Whiten struggled to match their opening day efforts and slipped down the leaderboard. Finally Steve Rooney finished his round with a fighting 75 to successfully defend his title with a 146 total. Steve will once again go to Woodhall Spa in September to represent Essex as Seniors County Champion. Graham Bennet finished runner-up, with Mark Hyam taking third place three shots behind the winner.
In the handicap categories, the Over 55’s winner was Richard Higgins (Stock Brook Manor) with a nett 140, followed by Graham Bennett on 142, on countback from Andy Dougherty (Crondon Park).
The over 60’s winner was Mark Hyam (Warley Park) with a nett 137, from Ian Waller (Thorndon Park) on 140 beating Fred Selfe (Belhus Park) on countback.
For the over 65’s Ron Wilkes (Orsett) took the honours with a two round nett total of 138, beating Edward Keeble (The Rayleigh Club) by two on 140.
Alan Watts (Chelmsford) won the over 70’s nett prize with 141, with John Wisbey (Hainault Forest) taking runner up spot on 145.
