Saturday 2nd April. The first Colts match of the Season - the annual friendly against Romford Golf Club's 2022 prospective Thornton Cup squad.
It had snowed overnight and the course was frosty white. Several snow showers during the day along with brilliant sunshine, but bitterly cold. British weather!!
Ten man team of new Colts bar one. Harry Wood played in the 2021 winning team, but the remaining nine were four from 2021 Under18's (now Colts age), one borrowed from the 2022 Under 18 current squad and four new faces. Proved difficult to find this team initially as the County were playing away to Kent and many Essex Players had entered the Berkhamsted Open. Good to see new faces. Romford had fourteen players to compete so had four exchanges for the singles.
The ten man team was as follows:- Timmy Moncur (West Essex), Beau Brunning (Three Rivers), Billy Gunyon (Thorpe Hall), Adam Crawley (Chelmsford), Edward Brown (Bentley), Harry Wood (Orsett), Jake Hinton (Brentwood), Bobby Archer (Garon Park), and Jack Boyd & Rory Bennet (Thorndon Park). Thereby nine clubs represented.
Morning Foursomes: All tightly contested with two matches going to the 18th, one to the 17th and two to the 16th. Ed & Beau and Billy & Bobby won 3&2, Rory & Jack 2&1 Timmy and Adam 2up. The lost match of the morning went to the 18th where Jake & Harry lost to Ben Scanes & Louis Lazarus (and ex-County Colts Players). Morning Foursomes 4-1
Afternoon Singles: Again all close matches - one halved, six wins to Colts and three to Romford. The halved match was between Rory (our borrowed player from the Under 18's) and Louis Lazarus. The six Colt's wins were Timmy and Jack both 4&3, Adam and Billy both 2&1, and Harry and Jake both 2up. Three of those matches were against fresh Romford players who had not played in the morning. Singles: 6 1/2 : 3 1/2.
Match Total: 10 1/2 : 4 1/2. Didn't they do well!
A change for 2022 in the setup for the SE England Colts. As entry numbers were so low there is now only the one league of five Counties, with two matches at home and two away. The overall winner being calculated on points with no SE England final.
Our thanks to Romford Golf Club for hosting this match and best wishes to all players for the 2022 Season
