On a bright but cold April morning the annual Cheshnut Salver match between Essex & Hertfordshire was renewed after a couple of years of not being played due to the pandemic. The match consists of a combined U16s & U18s team and the guys played Foursomes in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon at Mill Green GC. The foursomes matches flowed back and forth and were pretty close in 4 of the 6 games before we reached lunch with Essex leading by a single point 3 1/2 to 2 1/2

The singles matches teed off as the wind strengthened and it became noticeably colder making scoring more difficult. However there was some excellent golf from both sides and plenty of birdies, sprinkled with the occasional eagle in some high quality matches. Essex had a strong start with wins in the top 2 matches but Hertfordshire hit back with good performances in the next few games. Towards the back of the matches the pendulum swung the way of Essex and with the singles ending 7 1/2 to 4 1/2 the match result was a victory for Essex by a margin of 11 to 7

I would like to thank Hertfordshire Golf and Mill Green GC for looking after us all day and welcoming us for the match. It was played in truly excellent spirit and even on the occasion a ruling was required it was done with honour and humility. Well done to all the Essex boys for the victory which sets us up for the league season to come and we look forward to the return match next year.
