The Keith Bass Trophy - Played against Suffolk (Host), Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Essex.
This event was played at Seckford GC, the format was the best three (3) gross scores and the best three (3) nett scores from a team of Eight (8). We had taken a reserve.
We decided to have a practice round the day before the match and travelled by minibus to the venue. We were supported by Lee LAUGHLIN (County Coach), who walked round with the three (3) groups, watching and advising them on course management. The players made notes on their phones and scorecards as they played. After the round Lee had a debrief with the players at the club. We then went to our hotel and after dinner, retired for the day.
Match day arrived, players were up early for breakfast and checked out of their rooms. We had a couple of hours before going to the venue. The players spent this time transferring their notes to paper, so that they can refer to them whilst playing, without infringing any rules, sharing and talking amongst themselves. On arrival at the venue, the players went through their pre-round routines, had some lunch and took onboard plenty of fluids. They followed the instructions given to them by Lee, regarding warming up about twenty (20) minutes before teeing off, Robert and I made sure that this happened. The players went off in a mixed group of three (3) in handicap order. The hosts usually have a reserve, who's score does not count for the competition, that players with the last pairings to make up the three (3) ball, he decided that he was not going to play and walked off. We were able to get our reserve to take his place (Ray SMART).
Charlie RUSBRIDGE, was made captain for the day and he led the team from the front both on and off the field. He finished the front nine (9) three (3) over and ended up Level Par after Eighteen (18), to win the individual gross score. As the players completed their rounds Charlie was at the last hole seeing everybody in and praising them for their efforts, the other players followed his lead and did the same.
The Team Scores (Nett):
Charlie RUSBRIDGE - 66
Alfie DORRINGTON - 69
George WOODHEAD - 71
Oliver McEVOY - 72 (66)
Joshua NANSON - 75 (66)
Ali-Asgher HAJI - 78 (70)
Freddie RAVEN - 80 (70)
Teddy HOBBS - 74 (72)
The team won the competition with a combined total of 408, beating Norfolk 424, Bedfordshire 428 and Suffolk 454.
The decision to have the practice round the day before and stay overnight was taken by myself and Robert, as we believe that we have to instil in these young players the importance of preparation and that a team is only as strong as it's weakest player. The bonding and learning experiences that took place over those two (2) days will last with them forever, hopefully they can pass those onto future generations of young Essex players.
Thank you to Mike THIRKETTLE for his support in arranging the transport and accommodation and being part of making this winning Team.
