On Sunday 15th May our U18s arrived at Lambourne GC for our first league match of 2022 against the hosts BB&O and Middlesex. Unfortunately as we arrived the rain began to fall and was fairly heavy for a large part of the day. It called for extra preparation and planing from the boys to make sure everything was kept dry and they could concentrate on the match. BB&O won the league last year so we knew this was going to be a very tough fixture but the boys were confident and set about their task right from the off.
The course was in perfect condition with the rain softening the greens, which retained plenty of pace. Charlie Croker led the team off and after a big win against his Middlesex opponent was victorious on 18 in a great game against BB&O, next out was Rory Bennet who also had a good win vs Middlesex and eventually settled for a half vs BB&O. Henry Styles was out at number 3 and was involved in a very close encounter against both his opponents before a top quality shot from the fairway bunker on 18 gave him a 1up win in both games. Ollie Baker split his two matches, and following him were Freddie Warn and Micah Blowers who both took a half against their BB&O opponents. This left captain Will Horne and fellow Orsett member Marley Read to bring up the rear. Will played some superb golf to gain two big wins and our resident anchor man Marley was once again the rock at the back and completed two close victories.
The final results left us with two wins, 7-1 against Middlesex and 5.5-2.5 against BB&O and gives us the perfect start to the league campaign. It was noted by our opponents officials that our team spirit and togetherness was a huge asset, which is testament to the boys and their professionalism. I would like to thank BB&O for hosting and Lambourne GC for their excellent golf course, and we look forward to our next league match at Chelmsford GC on 31st July.
