Having arrived at John O'Gaunt GC with the team fully prepared, we were hopeful of a strong showing in the EG SE Group Boys Qualifier for 2023. The Team of Marley Read, Charlie Croker, Charlie Rusbridge, Freddie Warn, Ollie Baker & Henry Styles set out for the morning round in great spirits and played some excellent golf. With 5 of the 6 scores counting in each session we reached the lunch break holding a 4 shot lead on the field followed by a very strong Surrey squad who boasted the 2023 U18s English champion in their ranks.
As the afternoon round began the conditions started to deteriorate and got progressively worse as the day went on. We were hoping this would result in higher scores coming in which might suit us after the morning results. However despite our boys again performing superbly, the Surrey squad delivered absolutely stunning afternoon rounds and as a team were 3 under par in horrific golfing weather. The fact our boys went out and produced a score 1 better than the morning was all that could be asked from them but it was not to be, and we finished second to a very impressive Surrey team who will move on to National Finals to represent the SE group. We finished 15 shots ahead of 3rd place and our total score would have been a winning one in almost every other year.
The team were deflated to not have won but they certainly didn't lose it and were just pipped by an exceptional team. I am extremely proud of all of the efforts from all concerned and we now look forward to trying to win the league and reach the final in September.
