We arrived at Abridge GC for our first fixture of the season to find a mid March frosty morning with crisp spring sunshine. It remained cold for most of the day which meant a number of layers were required which is not ideal golfing conditions but everyone was eager to begin our 2025 campaign with the annual match between Essex & Cambridgeshire for the David Hall Trophy.
The foursomes were led off by Boyce Hill GC pairing of Mitch Sarling & Andy May. Playing the Cambridge top pair was a bit of an indication of the closeness of many of the day's matches to follow. In total over half of all the matches played went down the 18th before the result was confirmed. The morning's matches ended up with Essex holding a 3.5-1.5 lead going into lunch and the result was still in the balance. The afternoon singles were to result in more very tight matches. The first 4 games out all went to the last and were shared with 2 wins apiece. Big victories for Ryan Cox and Shay McQueen in the middle of the order turned the result in our favour and with Ollie Allison and Will Dunn both holding reasonable leads in the back 2 matches we ran out 10-5 victors at the end of what was a closer match than the final scoreline reflects.
We would very much like to thank Abridge GC, especially GM Noel and F&B manager Chloe, for hosting us on the day and their hospitality was absolutely outstanding. Also thank you to Marian Hall who presented the trophy in honour of David that we are proud to retain again for 2025. We look forward to the reverse fixture back in Cambridgeshire in 2026.
