Chelmsford GC was looking in great condition to host our first SE League match of 2025 against BB&O. On a bright sunny but breezy morning the foursomes matches were led off by Jack Dyer & Ryan Cox for the home Essex team followed by the Colchester GC pairing of Olly Allison & Theo Baker, third out were Bailee Curran and the returning Jay Beisser and bringing up the rear were the young guns Henry Styles & Ed Mason. The morning session did not go how we hoped and we were soon under pressure from a young and extremely talented BB&O outfit, who thoroughly outplayed us for pretty much most of the morning. Our only success came in Match 3 where Bailee & Jay were 4&3 victors.
At lunch we knew we have a huge tsk on our hands to turn a 3-1 deficit into a possible victory. The singles began with the wind freshening making conditions tricky. Olly Allison led the team off and after building a front 9 lead he was pegged back by an eagle/birdie combination on 16 and 17 by BB&O's Ed Davies to force a halved match. Matches 2 and 3 also went to the 18th With BB&O taking match 2 and Jack Dyer securing our first full point in the singles on the final green.
We were still looking for another 4 points from the 5 singles matches out on the course, Bailee Curran Ed Mason and Ryan Cox all won their matches to give us hope but we still needed another point from the last 2 singles. Theo Baker and Henry Styles were both all square in their games after 14 holes, but to our delight the both birdied 15 and 16 to establish dormie leads by the time they reached the 17th, and both were able to close out victory to leave us with a 7.5-4.5 overall victory.
The afternoon performance from the whole team was a fantastic effort and a superb turnaround from a tough morning session. We would like to thank Simon and his BB&O team for a match of high quality played in excellent spirit by a group of very talented golfers who all did their counties proud. We thank Chelmsford GC for the as always brilliant hosting of the County team and the green staff and catering team for their sterling efforts to look after us.
We look forward to our next League match away to Bedfordshire on 29th June with anticipation.
Paul Prebble - County Team Manager
