On a cool Sunday morning, the County Team started their third league match of four against Middlesex at Northwood GC.
This did not distract the players for the job at hand in their bid to secure a win. The morning foursomes got underway at 08:00. In Match 1, Andy May & Mitch Sarling were up against Middlesex’s best pairing and succumbed to a 5&3 loss. Match 2, Jay Beisser & Ollie Allison won with a similar score of 5&4 and Match 3, Joe Dobbyn & Jack Dyer, were runaway victors with a 7&5 victory. Match 4 was a much tighter affair with Ben Humphrey (C) & Freddie Warn ahead throughout the match and secured the win on the 17th for a 2&1 victory. This gave Essex a 3-1 lead at lunchtime and set up a great position for the afternoon singles.
Into the afternoon singles, Jay Beisser raced out of the blocks and secured a 6&5 victory for Essex ahead of the first three matches. Mitch Sarling, up against Middlesex’s best player, lost 3&2 and Andy May finished soon after, with a 3&2 victory. Joe Dobbyn finished soon after with a 6&5 loss and then Ollie Allison finished with a 3&1 victory.
Essex needed just half a point to secure the overall match victory, and this was left to Jack Dyer. Playing the 17th with the match A/S, Jack played a superb 2nd approach shot for a tap in birdie and secured the victory with a 1up win on the 18th. With two matches left out on the course, Freddie Warn finished in style with a great birdie on the 17th to secure a 2&1 victory.
The last match, with the lead constantly switching between Essex and Middlesex, was a great contest and Ben Humphrey (C) took the advantage of going down the 18th 1up. Both players reached the green in 2 with Ben away first who charged the putt 6 feet past. Middlesex closed with a par which left Ben with a pressure putt to secure a 1up win, with his teammates watching on, it was never in doubt, and he holed it.
This gave Essex a convincing 9-3 overall victory, with one match left to play in the league. Again on display, was a great Essex team spirit and many thanks for the backroom team support.
Many thanks to Middlesex and Northwood GC, in particular to Andre and Will for looking after us on the day. Good luck to Middlesex for the rest of the season.
David Barrass
Assistant County Team Manager.
