The final triangular league match of the season was held on Sunday 13th July at Verulam Golf Club in St. Albans between hosts Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Essex. With another sunny dry day in propect, the course was hard and running, with preferred lies on the baked fairways.
After the efforts of the previous week in the South East boys county qualifier, the Essex squad was severely depleted with many of the regulars playing representative golf and international tournaments. This left only 2 team regulars available with 6 of the 8 boys making their under 18 debuts. Herts and Middx were also facing a similar dilemna.
With the League table showing BB&O out in front having completed all their fixtures, it was clear that Essex needed convincing wins against both of todays opponents if we were to stand any chance of making it to the League Finals later in the year. Indeed Herts also needed 1.5 points from today to top our league, so an enthralling day in prospect.
With 2 points each from Will Wright, Aaron Birch, Oliver McEvoy, Teddy Ralston, Ali Hadji and a point from Harry Dean against Middx, Essex managed the two wins required with a 5/3 over Herts and a 6/2 over Middx. This left the league standings with Essex, Herts and BB&O all level with 8 match points apiece, so the count went down to game points. Both Essex and Herts finshing again level at 29.5 each this left BB&O winners of the league by the narrowest of margins at 30.5 game points. A valliant effort by an inexperienced side leaving much optimism for the future of Junior golf in Essex.
Phil Hulse, Under 18 team manager
