Sunday 30th May saw a welcome return to County Team competition after 20months of enforced layoff. With no Foursomes games due to Covid restrictions, and a singles only format for this season, an away fixture against Bedfordshire at the short but tricky Apsley Guise and Woburn Sands Golf Club was upon us.
The Essex team was a mixture of youth and experience including Jackson Garnett of Five Lakes making his League debut after his victory in the Bonallack a few days earlier.
Ben Humphrey led off and quickly established a lead of 2up at the turn, Jackson out two also leading by one at the turn as was the experienced Brandon Meads. With Andy May all square, it was a good start for the away side. However, Beds were no pushover and the next 3 games had County Captain Ricky Lee 3 down, Ross Dee 4 down and Joe Tatam 5 down at the turn. A tight match at 3.5 points all. Last out was Harry Butler playing plus 3 handicapper Rob Sutton from Dunstable Downs and playing some sparkling golf, Harry was 6 up at the turn giving Essex the narrowest of leads.
With the first 3 games finishing with Essex wins, Andy May winning on the last and Harry closing out a 4&3 win in the last game and with games 5,6&7 going to the home side, final score was a very close 5/3 to Essex.
An excellent win for Essex against a talented Bedfordshire outfit.
Credit to Apsley Guise and Woburn Sands for some of the best greens to be found and a course in super condition also the warm welcome and hopspitality shown.
Next match is against BB&O at Chelmsford on 4th July
Team: Ben Humphrey (Chelmsford), Jackson Garnett (Five Lakes), Brandon Meads and Joe Tatam (Brentwood), Andy May and County Captain Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill), Ross Dee (Orsett) and Harry Butler (Chigwell)
