VETERANS TROPHY

The Burstead Golf Club - 23rd August 2016

The 2016 competition was played at The Burstead Golf Club on 23rd August on a beautiful Summers day. The course looked in excellent condition with the main challenge to the field of 65 players being the heat from the afternoon sun.

There are two trophies presented at this over 55’s event, the main one for the overall winner, The Veterans Trophy, and the second for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age, the Over 70’s Salver.

With the course firming up in the dry conditions and some subtle borrows on the excellent greens the early scores indicated the course providing a good challenge to the players. The early leader was Jim Fern (Five Lakes) with 34 pts, which was soon matched by Bob Finch (Hartswood).

Alan Rusbridge (Frinton) then returned a very steady 36pts, two 18’s, and held off the challenge of Paul Cooper (Channels) who returned the same score, but with a lower back nine total of only 13 pts.

The challenge from the Channels players was however not yet over, as Mike Steen (Channels) submitted an excellent 38pts to take the Clubhouse lead. Although this was the best score of the day, Mike was eventually pushed into second place as Steve Barry (Stock Brook Manor) also submitted a score of 38pts, but with a better back nine, he won the Veterans Trophy prize on countback.

In the over 70’s event, Fred Hill (Basildon) took second place with a creditable 30pts, but the winner was Gerry Keane (Thorndon Park) with a winning total of 31pts, to take the Over 70’s Salver.
