BOYS FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP
Played at Gosfield Lake Golf Club
Alfie Buttle & Tommy King
Gosfield Lake Golf Club saw the return of The Boys Foursomes Championship, but this year the weather was not as you may typically expect for early August. 30 pairs took part from Clubs around the county.
The morning saw a light drizzle fall consistently but the forecast suggested that it was going to get far worse as the day went on. So much so, that we notified every competitor prior to teeing off that there was a possibility that the championship may be played over just 18 holes due to the suspected weather.
As the morning progressed the rain got heavier and the course became wetter. However, Gosfield Lake soaked up the downpour exceptionally well, so much so that it looked likely that the afternoon round could take place, despite the rainfall.
The tough conditions meant that the scoring was certainly higher than recent years, but rounds of 78 (+6) by Chelmsford’s Nathan Parrish & Harvey Payne as well as Kieran Gravely & Harry Wood of Boyce Hill looked to be a good target for the morning. These early finishers were sat in the clubhouse locked as the rain got heavier. Nathan Parrish, looking to make it back to back wins as he partnered Joshua Coleman last year to win the title.
2015 Winner Alfie Buttle, had a new partner this year in Tommy King, Orsett’s pair returned a score of 76 (+4) which was impressive in such poor conditions. A double bogey, 4 bogeys & 2 birdies were included in their round which stated they played some pretty consistent golf in conditions where 7 & 8’s were becoming common.
Over lunch the weather did brighten up, so much so that it was decided that the afternoon round would go ahead. However, after just two groups had teed off the klaxons sounded and play was terminated for the day as the rain fell heavier than it had done all day, a shame but an unavoidable decision.
The pair that were most grateful of the weather was Alfie & Tommy, picking up the Essex Boys Foursomes Championship, Alfie for the second time in 3 years. Congratulations to them and Orsett Golf Club.
A big Thank You to Gosfield Lakes golf club and their members for once again hosting this event and providing their usual superb hospitality. Let’s hope for some sunshine next year.
