Essex Talent Shining Bright on Home and International Shores

The 2026 golf season is well and truly underway with national and international tournaments coming thick and fast for our county players.

This week alone, the Bernard Darwin Youth Salver was held over 72 holes at the prestigious Rye Golf Club, The British Universities and Colleges England and Wales Championship was hosted at The Nottinghamshire Golf Club and at the time of writing, The Spanish International Amateur Championship is currently taking place in Madrid.

Let’s start at Rye Golf Club where 6 Essex youngsters’ tee’d up for a testing 72 holes round the picturesque links.

Frankie Morton of Orsett Golf Club shone brightly with rounds of 71, 74, 71, 69 to rise up the leaderboard on day 2 and force a playoff for the honours.

Sadly, the playoff didn’t go Frankie’s way with Josh Thompson of Wentworth taking home the impressive silverware but his fine start to the year will serve him well as the season builds momentum.

Other notable mentions from Rye were Teddy Hobbs (Chigwell) sitting in 4th place after 36 holes following a fine second round of 69 and Adam Murphy (Romford) shooting a best of the day 68 in round 3.

Up in Nottingham, Patrick Mclean-Tatton and Oliver George were representing their Universities in the BUCS England and Wales Championship.

Both performed well with Patrick finishing the tournament in T8 place with 3 solid scores of 73, 74, 70 and Oliver closing the tournament out in 19th place.

Last but not least, Harley Smith, Toby Peters and Charlie Rusbridge ventured out to Madrid for the Spanish International Amateur Championship with 36 hole strokeplay serving as qualification to the title deciding matchplay stages.

Harley got off to a fast start, leading the field with 66 in round 1 and qualified for the matchplay in 4th place with a 36 hole total of 138.

Toby stormed up the leader board on day 2 with a fine 66 in reply to his opening 74 and the ever consistent Charlie completed the trio making it to the matchplay with two solid scores of 72, 71.

Toby and Charlie both fell at the first hurdle in the knockout phase with narrow defeats but Harley romped to a 5&4 win to move into the last of 32.

We’ll be keeping watch of Harley’s progress as we go into the weekend.
