2017 Champions of The Faldo Wedge
Thorpe Hall Golf Club

Luke King / Max Webb / Ali-Abbas Haji

The Warren hosted The Faldo Wedge this year with a great entry of 120 Juniors from all around the County. The weather was kind throughout the day, bright but fresh for the early starters, gradually warming up through the day.

The Faldo Wedge consists of morning and afternoon start times, the mornings play saw some great golf, no more so than the host club’s ‘B Team’ consisting of Frederick Warn (Hcp22), Oliver Warn (22Hcp) & Paul Killington (Hcp21) returning with a combined score of 112 stableford points. Frederick’s 39 points was the highest for a while also until Abbie Webb (Thorpe Hall) returned with 40 points playing off a handicap of 13. Abbie’s Team would finish on 107 points just 5 points back from The Warren B.

The afternoon saw a continuation of good scoring, stableford points in the high thirties were becoming common by midway through the afternoon and The Warren B Juniors were looking concerned they may be about to see their lead slip. ‘Colchester A’ returned with 112 points also, which was impressive with the team of Max Maynard (Hcp7), Daniel Nicholls (Hcp4) & Cai James (Hcp2). Unfortunately for them, countback was applied and ‘The Warren B’ remained top of the leaderboard.

Luke King (Hcp11) of Thorpe Hall returned a score of 45 points taking the lead not only in the individual boy’s competition but also helping Thorpe Hall B team to claim the top spot on the leaderboard. Team members Ali-Abbas Haji (Hcp28) & Max Webb (Hcp17) returned with scores of 32 points and 36 points respectively, so they claimed top spot by 1 point for a total of 113 points.

Niall Attwood of Rochford Hundred Golf Club then recorded a best score of the day with a whopping 48 points playing off a handicap of 23. Dropping just 11 shots in his round was a great effort and will assist him in reducing his handicap no doubt. Unfortunately, the rest of Niall’s team could not match his incredible round and they were unable to displace any of the top teams, but Niall’s 48 points was more than enough to pick up the best boy’s individual prize.

Abbie Webb (Thorpe Hall A) was the winner of the best Girls individual prize whilst the ‘Thorpe Hall B’ score of 113 was just enough to clinch The Faldo Wedge. The course was in great shape and The Warren hosted the day magnificently, enabling all those involved to have a very enjoyable day.

Sir Nick Faldo himself showed an interest in the event as he tweeted the Essex Golf Union, wishing everyone the best of luck and stating he remembered the best shot he played with the Club that is now our annual Junior Team Trophy. A nice touch that County Secretary Nick McEvoy mentioned during the presentation.

Our thanks to all the Junior Organisers that do so much for junior golf in the county and The Warren Golf Club for hosting the event.
