The Essex County team’s 2nd League Match of the year was a home fixture at Chelmsford Golf Club against arguably our main rivals in the league, BB&O (Berks, Bucks & Oxon). With a 2 win from 2 record so far they held a comfortable lead atop the table so this was a must win for the home side to have any chance winning our section of the League. Living up to the billing, both sides were virtually at full strength with 4 current England players on display, a titanic match in prospect.
Restricted to 8 singles matches due to Covid regulations, Ben Humphrey led the way against England player Ollie Huggins and despite some inspired golf succumbed 3&2. First blood to BB&O.
In the second game BB&O fielded another England player, Ben Loveard with the obvious plan of gaining an early 2 point lead. This, however was thwarted by the in form Jackson Garnett who, despite never being ahead all the way round, sank a 15ft Birdie putt on the last hole to win the game 1 up. Honours even at one game each.
Game 3 saw Ryan Tattan with a comfortable 5&4 win over Alex Stubbs as did Brandon Meads in game 5 with a 6&5 win over the promising youngster Ben McFadden.
Game 7 had Carter Rowe comprehensively beaten by Rory Browne 6&5.
With the overall match finely poised at 3/2 everything rested on the shoulders of arguably our 3 best players, Arron Edwards-Hill, Zach Chegwidden and Walker Cup player Jack Dyer bringing up the rear.
With Arron winning a very tight game on the last, the match score was 4/2 to Essex. So just half a point needed from the last 2 games out on the course.
After 14 holes however, both Zach and Jack were each 1 down so a nail biting finish for the throng of home supporters and watching players.
With Zach winning the 15th to go all square and his opponent unable to shake Zach’s resolve the game finished on the 18th all square giving Essex the half point needed to secure the Match.
Meanwhile Jack was still out on the course against the formidable Tom Lawson and with a brilliant sandy birdie down 16 brought the game again all square. However to no avail as Tom won the last to take the game.
Overall score 4 ½ to 3 ½ in favour of Essex. As close as it gets between two outstanding sides.
With 2 from 2 for Essex and 2 from 3 for BB&O we now need to beat Middlesex at Sudbury GC on 8th August to overtake BB&O atop the League.
Our thanks to Chelmsford for their hospitality and allowing us yet again to use their course as our home venue.
