After a 3 week delay due to a flooded course, The Army Golf Club welcomed the Essex and Surrey County teams to conclude the 2021 League season in the England Golf South East Group Final.
With both sides welcoming a return to the normal format of 4 Foursomes matches and 8 singles, an early start was needed to complete the match in daylight. So just after Dawn, County team debutants Ryan Cox and Cass Steffens hit off the first tee shot in a very tough game against plus 6 and plus 3 pairing of Harvey Byers and Terry Nicholls. Game 2 had equally tough opposition of England players Enrique Dimayuga (plus 6) and Kris Kim (plus 3). Game 3 had Essex order of merit winner Bailee Curran paired with our own England player Zach Chegwidden up against Jack Kurzberg and Harry Hobday-Uzzell. Last but not least our old timers of Andy May and County Captain Ricky Lee up against Ben Palmer and Jacob Aaholm.
With the early exchanges all pretty tight, by halfway Essex were 2 up in the first two games and 1 down in games 3 & 4. These last two however slowly turned in Essex’s favour and by the 15th we were up in games 1,2,4 and all square in game 3 and a shock lunchtime score against the cream of Surrey was in prospect. The new boys in game one duly put the first point on the board closely followed by Joe and Shay. With Zach and Bailee squeezing a hard earned half from game three it was left to Andy and Ricky who were out on the course 2 up with 3 to play to get the last point. However in a spirited last 3 holes Surrey managed to win all 3 and take the point.
So with the Lunchtime score a narrow 2½ to 1½ lead to Essex, all was still to play for in the afternoon singles with another 4 points needed to secure victory.
The numerous spectators were treated to some scintillating golf from both sides with birdies and eagles flying in from both sides. Eventually Essex pulled out the 4 points needed with Shay, Ryan, Joe and Bailee all performing heroics against some of the best golfers in England, demonstrating the tremendous togetherness and will to win that prevails in Essex.
Our thanks to The Army Club for looking after us so well and to Mike Rees and Martin McDermott from England Golf SE Group for organising the day.
