The final Colts 2022 league match against Kent.
Team: Shay Mc Queen (Capt) & Jake Hinton (Brentwood), Cassidy Steffens & Bradley Coombes (Orsett), Cai James & Oliver Allison (Colchester), Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) & Jack Boyd (Thornton Park).
With the late withdrawal of one other selected player Jack Boyd filled in on the Saturday morning with only hours before the practice game, for which we were all extremely grateful.
Morning Foursomes: Strongly contested with Cai and Michael finishing on the 15th, Shay and Cass on the 16th and Jake and Jack on the 17th - all regrettably losing. Brad and Olly played together well and won 1up on the 18th. Foursomes 1 - 3.
Afternoon Singles: The Kent team selected their strongest players out first in view of their morning win. (They told us so - after we exchanged draw sheets!) Both Shay and Cass played under handicap but both lost 3&1. Cass remarked that he had never played against a better opponent - (" every time I thought I had a chance to win or at least halve the hole he sank a hallelujah putt!"). Kent had a good win of 6&5 in the third game and Michael lost the fourth game 3&1.
New Colts for this year somewhat saved the day. Brad had an excellent 4&3 win followed by one from Jake 4&2. Olly only lost on the 17th 2&1. Jack, our last minute fill in, took his game all square down the 18th. and with all the team watching and urging him on won the hole 1up. Singles 3 - 5 Match Result: 4 - 8
Kent were fielding a very strong team with five of their members being County players. They certainly knew the course and their short play was excellent.
Essex changes this year with the new requirement of players selected in advance for the County squad no longer able to play for the Colts and SE England changes from North v South to all five participating Counties playing in the one league made this a Colts development programme this year. We finish with positive thoughts and all to play for in 2023.
League Result: Hampshire & Bedfordshire 6 points, with Hampshire winning on game points. Essex, Surrey & Kent all 2 points. Good to note that we were the only County to beat the Hampshire winners.
