23rd August – Keith Bass Trophy – Match Report
Practice day began very well, with all the players being at the pick-up points on time. We arrived with plenty of time for something to eat before the practice round. Marcus RADMORE, County coach, was in attendance and walked the course with each group and provided a comprehensive report on a hole by hole, talking and asking the players for their thoughts on the next shot. We all went to the hotel where we dined and retired for the night.
Match day started with breakfast as a team, followed by every player transferring their scribbled notes into something they could understand on the course. The reason for doing this on the morning of the event is that it gets them to start thinking and focusing about the course and not the match. We arrived at the venue and having checked the handicaps of our players, earlier, the start sheet had to be adjusted accordingly. The players followed the routines put in place by the coaching team in preparation before teeing off. All the players teed off the first with confidence, knowing that they knew the course having played it the day before, unlike their opponents.
The format of the competition is the best three (3) Gross scores and the best three (3) best Nett scores, combined per team.
Alfie DORRINGTON put on a Captains’ display of solid golf against two (2) very accomplished young players, eventually winning the individual gross score of 75 (+1), by two (2) strokes, ahead of his teammates, Hayden NORMAN, and Rhys HATCHER of 77s (+3). This meant that we had a very good standing in the Nett scores. Luke McCARTHY followed with a Nett 73 (-1). Ray SMART and Jacob VERITY had respectable 76s (+2). This gave us a combine score of 454. Winning by 21 strokes.
The Essex U14s have now won this competition on the last seven (7) occasions and also winning the Individual Gross score on the last three (3) times by a significant margin. This is a tribute to the coaching staff and programme.
