17th September - Regional Final – Match Report
Practice day began very well, with all the players being at the pick-up points on time. We arrived with plenty of time for something to eat before the practice round. The players were given note pads prior to playing, comprehensive notes were made by all the players. We all went to the hotel where we dined and had a de-brief about how the practice round went and shared any possible problems on the course, all were have happy and retired for the night.
Match day started with breakfast as a team, followed by a team briefing about the course, the reason for doing this on the morning of the event is that it gets them to start thinking and focusing about the course and not the match. We arrived at the venue, with competition not starting till early afternoon, the players had lunch, before the players went off to follow their routines, in preparation before teeing off. All the first six (6) groups of players teed off, before the competition was suspended due to inclement weather. This caused chaos getting players back to the clubhouse, making sure that they were dry and stayed focused. The Competition was restarted as a nine (9) format instead of eighteen (18), this was only communicated to the team managers 15 minutes before resumption of play. We gathered the players together and informed them of the new format and got those who had started to the position on the course.
The matches were in general played in the spirit of the game apart from a couple, where there were interferences by the oppositions parents from the other two (2) counties. This led to a couple of our players feeling frustrated and being unfairly treated. Prior to the match I personally reminded all our players parents/guardians via email regarding the England Golf spectator code of conduct.
This situation had been highlighted by myself to the Match Officials and team managers. When I asked that this be communicated to all parents on the day, I was told that there is no need to do so by the Match Official.
The late start (1330hrs) to the competition was always going to to cause problems to complete the event in natural daylight. This was evident with the suspension of play due to the inclement weather.
It would appear that Surrey had the advantage on the day as most of their players had played the course on several occasions in recent months and eight (8) of their team will be moving to their U16s next year. The handicap index for their top six (6) were so much better then ours and they were physically stronger as a team.
I am really proud of the entire U14s squad for getting us to the finals and the other achievements in 2023.
Essex lost 7-3 to Surrey and Won 7.5 -2.5 against Bedfordshire.
