This match eventually took place on 6th August after several changes of date and venue, at Bedford & County Golf Club. A delightful parkland course. Par 70 with five par threes, but unfortunately already fully booked for the morning. It was therefore agreed that morning foursomes would be recorded as 2 – 2 and eight singles matches would be played in the afternoon.
Essex team was as follows: Shay McQueen & Jake Hinton (Brentwood), Rory Bennet, Jack Boyd & Dominic Piccolo (Thorndon Park), Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford), Max Maddocks (Thorphall) and Joe Smith (Abridge)
Two players – Max and Joe playing for the County for the first time. We should be seeing plenty of both of them in the future.
The eight matches were played in four groups. First off Shay and Rory were both well up after five holes and both kept their leads throughout.
After nine holes it was quite close. Essex up in four matches, down in three and halved in one.
Rory was the first to finish with an excellent 7&6. He flies back to USA on Tuesday to continue his studies there. We wish him well – see you next year! Shay then delivered a very steady and deserved 3&2 win. A good start for Essex
Next came Michael & Dominic – both playing to the 17th with Michael winning 3&2 and Dominic losing 2&1.
Third group then followed with Max (youngest player in the field and an excellent birdie chip down the hole on the 5th) winning 3&2 and Joe keeping practically level all way round finishing all square on the 18th.
In the final group Jack had a good front nine being 5 up but his opposite number wasn’t giving up easily, digging his heels in – another match to the 18th with Jack finishing with a 2up win. Jake drew the short straw – it’s all in the luck of the draw – Bedford leaving their strongest player to position 8. George Garnham, home member of Bedford & County and Club Champion for the last three years. A gallant try from Jake but George winning 5&4.
Singles 5½ - 2½ to Essex. Match total result 7½ - 4½
