Our last fixture of 2023 took place at Ifield GC where we contested the SE U18 League Final against Surrey & Suffolk in a 3 way matchplay format. We travelled down on Saturday for the practice round and after an overnight stay close to the course we arrived to a chilly end of summer Sunday morning for the Final. The guys were all in great spirits before the matches got underway and the weather was forecast to improve as the day went on. Having had a titanic battle with Surrey at the county qualifier earlier in the year we knew they would again be a tough nut to crack but we set out with high expectations. The first nine holes were indeed proving a tight affair and at the turn there was little to choose between all there teams. As the back nine progressed the first 3 matches were not going our way and although Dylan Hussey fought back from 2 down to level the match on 17 he lost to a birdie on the last. We needed some later matches to go our way and with the back 3 games looking good it was the middle of the order who needed to bring us home. Ed Mason birdied 17 to go 1 up but couldn't hold on and gained us a half and Henry Styles was 1 down playing the last but couldn't force the win on 18 to get us the extra point we needed. Some questionable decision making saw us end up on the end of a 4.5-3.5 defeat against Surrey, meanwhile we triumphed 5-3 over Suffolk. This left us as runners up again, as we were last year, and we will look at the lessons learnt in order to come back stronger in 2024 and regain the trophy.
I would like to thank my assistant Dave Barrass for all his invaluable support throughout the season and also to thank James Gurry and the rest of the EGU staff along with David Brooks our U18s coach. Also thanks to all the parents who tirelessly act as taxi drivers, cheerleaders and bankers to allow the boys to represent themselves their families and Essex Golf Union.
We go again next year and look to improve upon this season where we have fallen just short despite every effort to win trophies. I'm proud of all your efforts lads, have a great winter and practice hard ready for 2024.
