The Cheshunt Salver for 2024 took place at the impressive Dyrham Park GC near Barnet. April showers were very much in for the day and the golf course was very wet but all credit to the green staff for even presenting a golf course for the boys to play on. Throughout the wind and the rain the boys from both teams showed great resilience to power through and get the match completed and deserve praise for doing so.

In the morning foursomes there was a clean sweep for Hertfordshire with some excellent play. Matches 1,3 & 4 were tight all morning but unfortunately our lads could not get the desired results. We took an extremely young squad to this match due to fixture clashes and availability issues so it was always going to be a tough fixture, but what a learning curve all the boys had on the day and now know the levels they need to aspire to in order to compete at county level.

The afternoon singles began with more liquid sunshine falling from the sky and after a promising start where we held the lead in 8 matches at the turn, the back nine proved the difference and the afternoon session went to Hertfordshire, meaning an overall defeat for Essex. Notable performances in the singles came from Henry Linley, Mason Barningham & Dawson Langan in the U18s and from Luke McCarthy who had an impressive victory in his first U16s appearance.

So with slightly dampened spirits due both to the weather and the defeat we congratulate Hertfordshire on their excellent victory and look forward to next year's renewal and a chance to regain the trophy. Many thanks to Dyrham Park GC for hosting the match, they did a truly remarkable job to get the golf course open and the boys were grateful to get the match played.
