On a bright fresh April morning we arrived at Frinton GC for the annual County Team match against The Essex PGA. The course was in good condition given the amount of rainfall Essex has endured so far in 2024, and a mention to the green staff for producing superb putting services that had a great pace, players from both sides were very complimentery about the greens.
The morning foursomes set off with a cold wind into their faces on the first hole nd the county team fairly quickly established a lead. There was some excellent foursomes golf being played and crucial putts at the right times meant we moved further ahead in the top four matches and held that advantage throughout the morning session. With pars rarely being enough to win holes the lunch time score was a healthy 4-1 with the 5th match going to the pros Matt Stable & James Gurry.
The afternoon singles set off to a switch of direction in the wind, which brought a cold chill and a different challenge to the morning matches. The 180 degree change of direction meant that holes that had played easier in the morning were now playing into the teeth of the breeze making club selection tricky. Contrary to the morning matches which all had comfortable score lines, the afternoon singles were very much a closer affair. * of the 10 matches were nip and tuck all afternoon and in fact 7 games went to at least the 17th hole, so although we ran out comfortable winners, the lads were made to work very hard for every single point and could find themselves comfortable at any point. Impressive victories for Charlie Croker, Jackson Garnett and Ollie Baker were the highlight for the county team, and probably the most outstanding match was between Ross Dee & Jason Livermore who produced some superb golf all the way to the final green.
We would very much like to thank all of the pros for taking a day out of the schedules to play in this very important match that dates back to 1950 and we look forward to renewing the rivalry again next year. Our thanks also go to Frinton GC for their excellent hosting of the event, we were looked after all day and the course and the staff were fantastic.
We now look forward to our first league match on 12th May with renewed hope for the season.
