After the very warm practice day weather we arrived at Letchworth GC to cold and rain for the start of our 3rd league match of the season. The foursomes session was topsy turvy and we were up in match 1 but down in the back two matches, but as can happen in matchplay games can turn around quickly and whilst the top match went against us with defeat on the last green, the other 3 matches turned in our favour and gave us a 3-1 lunch time lead.
The weather improved but the wind got up and conditions were tricky in the singles. Sean Mills lead the team off and despite having 5 birdies went down to a narrow defeat. In match 2 Shay fought back to go down the 18th but just came up short. so the score was now 3-3 and we needed the next few matches to go our way, and in fact we won the rest of the singles for an impressive team victory by 9 points to 3. Rory Bennet was making his debut for the County Team and won on the 17th, Bailee Curran was 5 under when winning 4&2, Ross Dee was victorious against the Hertfordshire captain, and solid performances from Lewis Wright, Olly Allison and anchorman Will Horne meant we took the singles session by a 6-2 margin.
We now have a gap until our final league match at home to Bedfordshire on 1st September. Our thanks go out to Letchworth GC for hosting the match and looking after us with catering and a golf course that was in excellent condition a week before the club championships. Also my thanks to Phil who as team captain was a great host and was very generous in his praise for our team.
We look forward to hosting Hertfordshire next year in the reverse fixture and wish them success for the rest of this season.
Paul Prebble - County Team manager
