We arrived at the superb Castle Royal GC for our first league match of 2024. Our opponents, BB&O and Hertfordshire had already played and won their first matches so we knew we were in for a tough fixture. The sun was bright and on the day of the Euro 2024 final everyone was keen to get started so we could all get home in time for the football to ko.
We had a slightly depleted team due to availability and holidays etc but drafted in two of our U16s squad to make their U18 debut and both of them didn't let themselves or Essex down. Hayden Norman was first off and shared his matches with 1 win and 1 loss. Alfie Dorrington was off third and managed to secure 1.5 points from his two games. An excellent debut from both of the boys and points towards a bright future at U18 level. In between these two Dylan Hussey brought home 2 points. The next four matches were shared with Toby Peters & Mason Barningham enjoying comfortable wins in both games, but Ed & Henry Linley were unfortunately not able to match those, going down in their games. This left the stage clear for our Captain Henry Styles to bring home the team with his 4&3 win over BB&O and a 3&2 victory over Hertfordshire.
This resulted in us gaining two fine overall wins by the core of 6 matches to 2 against Hertfordshire and by 4.5 to 3.5 against BB&O.
We thank Malcolm and BB&O for looking after us and Castle Royal golf club for hosting, the course was magnificent and we look forward to seeing both counties for the reverse fixtures in August.
