The County team's first league match of 2024 was at the magnificent Frilford Heath GC. The course was in superb condition and they are hosting a Clutch Tour event next week. The weather gods also shone on us as we teed off for the morning foursome in glorious sunshine. We were led off by Charlie Croker & Shaun Mills who after being 1 down at the turn, played some excellent golf to win 4&2. In match two county captain Ben Humphrey partner Mitch Sarling and in a very close fought match a half was a very fair result. Toby Peters & Shay McQueen were beaten in match three and in the bottom match, Charlie Rusbridge & & Bailee Curran were always in control and ran out 5&4 winners. This gave us a narrow lead at lunch and as the sun got hotter and with lots of liquid taken on we knew we still had a tough task in the afternoon.
Shay led us off and a really close match was settled with an honourable half on the last. Excellent victories from Charlie and Shaun in matches two and three meant we needed 2 more points from the remaining 5 matches. Mitch came up against an inspired opponent who was 5 under par but Bailee held a lead for most of the round before winning on the 17th and debutant Toby completed an impressive win 3&2. With captain Ben winning on 16 also, we had the points we needed for the victory by 8 points to 4.
This was a really good result for us away against our historically strongest opponents and sets us up well for the rest of the league fixtures. We would like to thank BB&O and Frilford Heath GC for their fantastic hosting and to the teams who played the match in great spirit. The golf played was immensely impressive is very warm conditions which required a lot of mental concentration throughout. We now look forward to our next league match at home to Middlesex on 2nd June.
