We hosted Middlesex for our 2nd League match of 2024 on a bright sunny morning at Chelmsford GC. After some unfortunate misunderstanding over dates resulting in a late change to the Essex line up the foursomes was started by the club captain Mike Beard. All of the morning matches were very closely fought and 3 of the 4 games were settled on the final green, but eventually we came out with a 3-1 lunchtime lead thanks to victories in the top two games and halved contests in the bottom two.
We set off for the afternoon singles needing 3.5 points to secure victory and with the matches again being tight affairs, apart from excellent wins for Olly Allison 4&3 and Will Horne by a superb 8&7, the rest of the games were in the balance for most of the afternoon. 5 of the other 6 singles went to the 18th and much like the morning session the result was in doubt until late in the day. Eventually we managed to win the afternoon session by 5 matches to 3 giving us the victory that keeps our 100% record intact for this years league campaign.
Our next match is a potential league decider away to Hertfordshire at the end of June. We thank Chelmsford GC for the excellent presentation of the course which was in superb condition a week before it hosts the County Championships, and also I would personally like to thank my assistant Dave Barrass who stepped in to manage the team on the day when I had to dust off the clubs and play. Also our thanks to Mike for his starting duties in the morning and our president Nick for the same in the afternoon. Finally to the catering staff for providing us with an excellent lunch and after match sandwiches.
