Burnham on Crouch Golf Club - 22nd August 2017

The 2017 competition was hosted by Burnham-on-Crouch Golf Club.  The weather was fine with bursts of bright sunshine but at times a cool breeze was looking to play havoc with exposed parts of the course. The course was in excellent condition with a field of 63 players enjoying the competition.

There are two trophies presented at this over 55’s event, the main one for the overall winner, The Veterans Trophy, and the second for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age, the Over 70’s Salver.

The scoring was tough as the winds caught a number of players out midway into their round. 35 points was best in for some time, Colin Brett (The Rayleigh Club) & Donald McGilvray (Thorndon Park) both managing to pip the rest of the field. Donald just beating Colin on Countback to secure third place. Paul Neale (Colne Valley) returned a respectable 37 points after just 17 on the way out which inluded a no score on the par 4, 3rd hole and also later in his round on the 12th. Despite the twelfth, he managed 20 points for his back nine, which secured him 2nd place in the over 55's event.

A steady round from Mike Sutton (Colchester), saw points on all of his 18 holes, with only three holes where he scored just the one point. This meant, by picking up three points on 6 of his remaining holes he managed to return with an impressive score of 39 points, winning the Championship by two points from Paul Neale.

In the over 70’s event, John Sutton (Brentwood) took the Over 70’s Salver as he returned with a score of 33points. John took this year's title on countback from Richard Taylor (Five Lakes) who also managed 33 points.
